Galway City Floods - January 2014

A series of images taken in Galway city centre at high tide on January 3rd (from 6am which was high tide to around 7am). There are also some pictures showing the aftermath in Salthill of the huge storm that accompanied the high tide. The Salthill pictures were taken around midday, long ager the tide had receded and some of the floodwater had begun to drain away. Kudos to the council staff, police and fire service who were out in force from very early this morning until late this evening dealing with the aftermath of the floods.
UPDATE: I've also added some pictures from Silver Strand, taken on Jan 5th.

There is an office and development that overlooks the Galway Canal Basin. At high tide, the water came right to the doors of the ground floor offices, but I'm not sure if the water entered the building. In the foreground, the canal has flooded out onto the street.

To the left is the car park of Jurys Inn, and beside it is the bottom of Quay Street. The flooding is caused by sea water sloshing in (from the Spanish Arch, to the right out of picture) . This picture was taken at high tide.

An hour earlier (at high tide), floodwater had flowed across this street and flooded into the premises along the road. Once the tide dropped, the water flowed back into the Galway Canal and business people began the hard job of cleaning up.

The hole in the pavement in the foreground marks where the lifeguard hut should be located. Instead, it was flung further down the path. It is a converted metal shipping container so it gives a good idea of the force of the sea

    Washed Away

There used to be a sandy beach in the foreground, but is now just a debris field of rocks. Many of the businesses along the Prom suffered water damage - the retail units (on right of picture) have basements - many of which were filled with sea water during the storm.

  • Flooding on Grattan Road

    Flooding on Grattan Road

Grattan road is part of the sea defence in Salthill - it provides a barrier to the houses and land behind it, which is lower in places that the sea. The storm caused the sea water to spill into the grassland in front of the houses pictured.
