Inis Mor (Aran Islands)
Sundial on Inis Mor
This is a an ancient sundial. To use it, one puts a stick through the hole at the top of the stone, and the shadow cast upon the circle below would give a measurement. There is, of course, just one little problem, as this picture demonstrates. What do you do when the sun doesn't shine ?

This picture isn't infrared - just monochrome. Even the original colour version was almost entirely composed of shades of grey, and the large rocks - worn smooth from the action of the sea - had a rather beguiling mottled pattern caused by the damp drying irregularly on the rock surface.

This is a picture of me, standing beside a limestone boulder that has become dislodged from the cliff-face on Inis Mor (the largest of the Aran Islands).

The cliffs on Inis Mor are being eroded by the sea, so that the limestone cliffs overhang the lower levels by many metres (before they come crashing down)
